Judge orders DA Gonzalez to get schooled on victims rights

Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez

Following yet another violation of the Marsy’s Law for the protection of victim’s rights, Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez and her assistant prosecutors have been ordered to complete a course on the correct way to utilize the state’s Crime Victim’s Bill of Rights.

The order by Superior Court Judge Lawton Stephens came after the he ruled that Gonzalez’s office had violated the bill that is commonly called Marsy’s Law.

In this case, victims were not informed about a bond hearing for the offender.

The judge noted that it was the fourth such violation since Gonzalez took office nearly four years ago.

Superior Court Judge Lawton Stephens

Stephens found that Gonzalez’s office had failed

to keep victims in a criminal case apprised of a significant development concerning prosecution of the offender.

In his order the judge said that Gonzalez and her

staff must complete within 60 days the Victim’s Bill of Rights course that’s provided by the Georgia Prosecuting Attorney’s Council.

Gonzalez publicly admitted the Marsy’s Law violation in a statement:

“"We are deeply committed to protecting the fundamental rights of victims and survivors of crime. Victim advocacy is not just a part of the work we do. It is at the core of our mission. We have taken significant measures to enhance our victim communications office protocols.”
