A woman was recently taking a walk in east Athens when she came upon a dead Cane Corso in a cage lying on its side on a dead end street.

Police said it appeared that the dog had been dead for several days and its body was taken for a necropsy at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

From microchip data it was learned that the dog was a two-year-old female Cane Corso named Scar, whose listed owner was a man living in Hall County. He reportedly told police that he had sold the dog to his brother who lived on Martin Circle in Athens.

When police called that man he promised to get back to them after he finished work that day but he never did.

According to police, an investigation was continuing that focused on the crimes of animal cruelty and abandonment of a dead animal.
