Perhaps our mayor and commissioners should reconsider their decision to make Athens a "Sanctuary City" in order to attract the homeless and illegal from all over N E Georgia. They have made other decisions which should be reconsidered as well, but this one is certainly the hot topic at the moment.

And voters might wish to reconsider exactly what they are voting for at the next election. Compassion on the part of elected officials is fine when it doesn't result in supporting the criminal element in our society. And wasting tax payer funds. But you can't blame politicians for following the dictates of their constituency. And the voting population in Athens is fairly hard core left win neo com la…

Most students in Athens are not registered to vote in this county first of all. So your logic is flawed there. Most of Athens is highly educated or minorities that experience the violence and inequality of conservative policies.

What attracts people to Athens are services they can’t receive in smaller more rural counties. If you have a problem with people coming to Athens, address those issues with local governments in NE Georgia and ask why they aren’t supporting their constituents?

Also, immigration status doesn’t matter when it comes to violence and misogyny…those qualities run through all cultures and backgrounds.

Should the tragic murder of a young person be used to gain support of your political stance or hatred of immigrants? Asking for those grieving the loss of a friend and family member.

I would be most interested to hear what people who have recognized experience as criminal justice professionals would recommend. Understandably students, faculty, staff and the parents of students are proponents of safety. Any of us who watch news programs or read newspapers know our world is not 100% safe. This day time rape/murder was a horrific crime that has understandably rattled the entire community. But what are "realistic expectations" for actions that could be taken for preventing similar violence? One thing many students already know is that their safety is enhanced by moving about the campus in groups with buddies. Traveling about alone may enhance the attraction of predators who identify the loner's vulnerability.

The ACC government should not have become a sanctuary city, this would never have happened . This is not the fault of UGA and if not for the cameras UGA had in place, this murder may never have been solved. Responsibly is on the Mayor.
