Dylan Betts was driving home from work last Tuesday afternoon when he saw heavy smoke billowing from a house on Oakmont Circle in Winterville.
Without thinking twice, he ran to the front door, kicked it open, looked around and heard David calling out for help. Upon locating the man amidst the dense black smoke, Betts led David to safety outside.
Another Good Samaritan who had stopped to offer help, Alan Carver, accompanied David across the street and remained there with him until his family arrived.
The fire was extinguished by personnel from the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department and Winterville Volunteer Fire Department.
The house was declared a total loss.
Officials said the fire began in the garage, but its cause was still under investigation.
