University of Georgia football player’s reckless driving arrest detailed in Athens police report

By Joe Johnson

A University of Georgia football player was arrested by a police officer who saw him driving the wrong way on a one-way street in downtown Athens, with a passenger “partly outside” of his car.

According to a police report, the officer observed the alleged violations at about 2 a.m. Saturday when 18-year-old Sacovie Jahmal White was driving a 2021 Dodge Charger “at a high speed” the wrong way on East Clayton Street.

The officer noted in the report that the violations occurred in an area where people were leaving bars and entering vehicles near multiple crosswalks, “showing a complete disregard for the safety of his passengers, himself, and innocent civilians.”

The passenger who reportedly had been partially outside of the car was not identified in the report.

When making contact, the officer explained to the UGA Bulldogs freshman wide receiver that he was being arrested because “there had multiple accidents with pedestrians involved and we are trying to prevent more from happening.”

White was booked into the county jail for the misdemeanor offenses of reckless driving and driving the wrong way on a one-way street.

He was released upon posting bonds totaling $26.
