A University of Georgia student reportedly was raped early Saturday in a neighborhood west of downtown Athens.

According to Athens-Clarke Cunty police, the 22-year-old victim reported she was raped at about 3 a.m. in the area of Dearing and South Church streets.

The victim did not know her attacker, who she described as a dark-complexioned black male with an athletic build who was about 5 feet, 10 inches tall had short hair and wore dark pants and a grey hoody, police said.

The site of the attack was in a neighborhood located several blocks west of the UGA’s Main Campus and is where many students reside.

Police asked that anyone who believes they have information about the incident or the suspect to contact Detective Rick Dearing at (762) 400-7174 or gregory.dickson@accgov.com.

In the wake of the incident, police issued the following advice:

* If walking home, stay with a group and stay in well-lit areas;

* Always be aware of your surroundings and call 9-1-1 if you see someone or something suspicious.

If you or someone you know has been victimized by sexual assault or child abuse, call The Cottage Crisis Hotline at 1-877-363-1912.
