A pilot and a passenger reportedly were injured Friday morning when their airplane crashed near the Barrow County Airport.
The Cessna 172 single-engine aircraft crashed just before 11 a.m. in a wooded area near Giles and Ernest Elder roads, just east of the Barrow County Airport, according to Barrow County Emergency Services Capt. Scott Dakin.
The plane’s two occupants had gotten out on their own prior to the arrival of firefighters, who extinguished a small fire in the woods that was spark by the crash, Dakin said, adding that the pilot and passenger were transported to the hospital for treatment.
The cause of the crash will be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
