A darkened tag on a vehicle Monday night resulted in the arrest of an Athens man on drug and weapons charges. Athens-Clarke County police said.
An officer was on patrol on Spring Valley Road at about 10:45 p.m.., when he saw a car being driven by 36-year-old Troy Bennis that "did not have lights illuminating the tag," according to the officer’s report.
After conducting a traffic stop on Rannick Road, the officer noticed an odor of marijuana coming from Bannis’ Ford Mustang, according to police Public Information Officer Geof Gilland, who said a search of the vehicle found a quantity of marijuana, heroin, a gun and cash.
Bannis, of River Chase Drive, was charged with trafficking in heroin, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and was cited for a tag light violation.
A Magistrate Court judge denied Bannis bond during a Tuesday hearing.
